JACKSONVILLE, Ala. (March 11, 2016) – Several residents of Legacy Village of Jacksonville have been competing in Race Across Alabama, a health and wellness program which, over the past few months, was equivalent to walking from Jacksonville State University to Mobile.

The program was implemented for the first time on Aug. 1, 2015, and is still ongoing until all participating residents have finished. The goal is to help motivate the residents of Legacy Village of Jacksonville to be active.

The challenge was to see who would be the first to walk 500 miles, and Mr. Bob Doe accepted and conquered this challenge as the first-place winner. His reward was dinner at Shula’s Steak House in Birmingham with a choice of three friends, courtesy of Legacy Village of Jacksonville. “The key is to watch what you eat and to always exercise. It’s that simple,” Mr. Doe said.

“Mr. Doe always stays active and is constantly walking around the building. He is definitely passionate about health and wellness and helps motivate the other residents,” Nicole Smith, Legacy Village of Jacksonville Marketing Director, said. Mr. Doe received his Ph.D. in Exercise Physiology and Kinesiology from Ohio State University and commonly talks about the importance of being healthy and active as one ages. “I went on to teach Exercise Physiology and Kinesiology, and I know there is great value and worth of staying healthy, eating right and exercising at least half an hour each day,” Mr. Doe said.

Second-place winner Ms. Elwanda Whisenant won a premiere lunch at Classics on Noble. The third-place winner, yet to be announced, will receive a handmade quilt.
