JACKSONVILLE, Ala. (May 27, 2016) – Legacy Village of Jacksonville residents have kicked off the summer tending to their vertical, aeroponic tower gardens by Juice Plus+®.

Using a tower garden that uses only water and nutrients rather than dirt, residents are experimenting with growing up to 20 different herbs, plants, flowers, vegetables, or fruit. The tower garden uses only water and nutrients rather than dirt. “It was very hard for the residents to believe that they didn’t need dirt to grow the plants,” Nicole Smith, Legacy Village of Jacksonville’s Director of Sales and Marketing, said.

Legacy Village of Jacksonville residents are growing cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, green beans, watermelon, strawberries, green peppers, banana peppers, baby broccoli, onions, and mint.

Three tower gardens have been installed: one in the Harbor Memory Care Veranda, one in the Bird and Butterfly Courtyard, and one in the Outdoor Grill and Patio Area.

“The residents tend to the tower garden about three to four times a week. They enjoy spending time outside as they watch the plants grow and produce. They are anxiously awaiting to eat them!” Smith said.

“Many people in this generation grew up tending their gardens every day. Having the tower garden gives them something to do and something to look forward to. It seems to be very therapeutic for them,” Smith said.

“We are thrilled to provide another life enrichment opportunity for our residents at Legacy Village of Jacksonville! This unique hydroponic garden grows without soil, so the residents find it very intriguing, fun and enjoyable! They are looking forward for the next harvest, so they can eat the food it provides,” Bryan Cook, chief operating office with Legacy Senior Living, Management Company of Legacy Village of Jacksonville, said.
